What's up with over-religious people and sex?

It's a control tactic. Religions often preach that sexual pleasure is immoral or ungodly. Since sexual pleasure is among the most satisfying and widely available of sensations, this is effectively a recipe for guilt trips, which brings people back to churches/temples/etc. in order to atone for their "guilt".
